Read the Facts

Breast cancer & younger women

  • Breast cancer rates in women under 40 are increasing dramatically.

  • Young women with breast cancer have higher mortality rates and greater risk of cancer returning (metastatic recurrence) compared to older women

  • Historically, there has not been an effective screening tool for women under 40 due to dense breast tissue (mammograms are unreliable with dense tissue).

  • Since most screening has been limited to self-examination, breast cancer in younger women tends to be more aggressive and is often diagnosed at later stages.

  • Black women under the age of 35 have 2x higher diagnosis rates and 3x higher death rates compared to white women of the same age.

  • 30% or more of breast cancer in young women is diagnosed within a few years after having a baby.

  • Over 13,000 women under 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, with more than 1,000 dying from the disease annually.
